Social Media Management
But How Do You Actually Hire a Professional Social Media Management Agency?
There are a lot of social media marketing agencies out there, and most of their websites say almost exactly the same thing.

There are a lot of social media marketing agencies out there, and most of their websites say almost exactly the same thing: results-driven, data-backed, full-service. None of that tells you anything useful. Here’s what actually matters when you’re choosing one.
Start with what kind of agency you actually need
“Social media agency” covers a wide range of setups, and picking the wrong type is the most common reason a hire doesn’t work out, in much the same way picking the wrong platform undercuts a content strategy.
- A social media content agency focused mainly on creating posts, graphics, and video, good if strategy isn’t your gap, execution is.
- A social media advertising agency, sometimes called a paid social media agency, focused on running ad spend on platforms like Meta and TikTok, different skill set from organic content entirely.
- A full-service social media marketing agency handling strategy, content, community management, and often paid ads together.
- A B2B social media marketing agency, which is worth calling out specifically, B2B social media runs on completely different logic than B2C. If you’re selling to other businesses, an agency whose entire portfolio is fashion and restaurants is going to be starting from zero on your audience.
Know which one you need before you start taking calls. It cuts your shortlist in half immediately.
What to actually ask in the first call
Skip the pitch deck questions. Ask these instead, or if you’d rather talk it through directly, book a free diagnostic call:
- “Can you show me a client in our industry, and what changed after they started working with you?”
- “Who’s actually writing and posting our content, is it you, or is it handed to a junior account manager I’ll never talk to?”
- “What does a normal week of deliverables look like, specifically?”
- “What happens if we want to end the contract, what’s the notice period?”
- “How do you report results, and can I see a sample report?”
The answers matter less than how directly they’re given. A social media agency that’s actually good at this will answer specifically. One that’s not will talk around it.
Understand the pricing model before you compare quotes
Agencies price this work a few different ways, and comparing a quote from one model against a quote from another is comparing apples to oranges:
- Flat monthly retainer, most common, easiest to budget against
- Per-platform pricing. You pay more as you add channels
- Project-based, for a single campaign or launch rather than ongoing management
- Percentage of ad spend, specific to paid social media agency work, not organic
Ask which model you’re being quoted under before you compare it to anyone else’s number. What “good” actually looks like
- Guaranteed follower counts or guaranteed virality. Nobody can actually promise this
- Reluctance to share any real client examples, even anonymized ones
- A contract with a long lock-in and no clear exit clause
- Reporting that only ever shows follower growth, never engagement or business outcomes
- A generic proposal that could have been sent to literally any business, with nothing specific to yours in it
What “good” actually looks like
A social media marketing agency worth hiring will ask you more questions than you ask them, at least at first. They’ll want to know your actual business goals, not just “grow our Instagram.” They’ll be upfront about what’s realistic in three months versus what takes longer. And they’ll be able to explain their approach to your specific situation in plain language, not agency jargon. If you’re evaluating a social media agency near you specifically because you want in-person meetings, that’s a fair reason to filter by location, but it shouldn’t be the deciding factor over the quality of the work itself. Plenty of the best agency relationships run entirely over video calls.
